The best (cyberpunkish) sci-fi books worth the hype

The late American master sci-fi author Philip K. Dick, or just PKD, wrote 44 novels and some 121 short stories. Even if you have never read one of them, you’ve seen the many movies and TV Series based on them.

This novella was the inspiration for Ridley Scott’s classic movie Blade Runner (the original). Like the movie, it portrays sci-fi as the mirror opposite of the bright Star Trekian sci-fi. Here we get cyberpunk (or tech-noir)—ubiquitous neon lights barely illuminate the dark shadows of this future world.

Mankind has been forced off-world, but those who remain on Earth collect any living creature. Those who can’t afford them can buy them from companies who create animals so realistic they are indistinguishable from the real thing–horses, birds, cats, and…sheep. But these companies can build humans, too. Earth bans these “replicants,” and our protagonist, Rick Deckard, is a bounty hunter commissioned to hunt these androids down and “retire” them. But the androids fight back.

Both the novel and classic film were the inspiration for my own Liquid Cool cyberpunk detective thriller series.

I’ll admit it. Usually, when I see an “award-winning” book, I’m turned off because I’ve seen so many of these books fail to live up to the hype. This book was an amazing exception. It deserved its 2018 Hugo Award for Best Novella and Nebula Award for Best Novella.

The entire book can be summed up with this one tongue-in-cheek sentence from the protagonist: “As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.” This android is very capable of killing efficiently and coldly. But it’s also very “human.” Humans are exploring other planets and security androids are mandatory. Murderbot is self-aware and is most content when alone–limiting its contact with humans, but what would be the fun of that in this sci-fi adventure?

This book is pure cyberpunk.

Humans who can afford it can store their consciousness in a device at the base of their brain, which can be downloaded into a new body (called a “sleeve”) later on. Death no longer exists. Our protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs, a specially-trained soldier, has been killed before. He’s dispatched to investigate the mysterious death of an aristocrat. No surprise, there is a greater conspiracy at play.

If consciousness can be digitized, bought, and sold, what is the true essence of a real person anymore? 

Matthew and I were on an author panel in the past. I’m all into supporting fellow authors, especially those in a similar sub-genre.

In this story, the orphaned protagonist, Moss, has finally found his place in the world with his employer. But everything is turned upside down when a mysterious woman breaks into his apartment and hands him a data chip from his dead parents. All is not as he believed, and to find the truth, he must venture out into the dangerous megacity streets filled with outcasts and criminals. Here, he meets a rebel group intent on exposing their corrupt oppressors, including his old boss, who now wants him dead.

Anna is another fellow author I’ve worked with in the past.

In her futuristic novel about warring mega-corporations, cyborg Nephilim and her elite cyborg squad are sent on the most dangerous missions to protect the interests of their company at any cost. But then one of her implants malfunctions, and she’s freed from the controlling grid. She learns that everything she has believed in all her life is a lie. To defend her newfound freedom, she must run from the elite killer squads she once belonged to.
